Here’s what Moda say about it
“So what is “barkcloth”? It’s a soft, thick, slightly textured fabric made of densely woven cotton fibers. Though it was traditionally used for home furnishings, modern sewists are using it for clothing, accessories and small home décor items. Part of our new Pure & Natural category, Moda Barkcloth will be available as 16” toweling and 45” wide yardage.
Use the 16” width to make kitchen tea towels or a table runner that feel like vintage linen, and use the 45” width to make tote bags, pillows, jackets and other clothing items. Both widths would have an excellent background for wool and traditional applique.”
What I think is really exciting about these new textures is their use as backgrounds for appliqué. There are so many exciting new appliqué trends happening at the moment and the use of multiple textures, including beautiful wools appliquéd onto a variety of backgrounds is inspirational. It’s also fun and funky and quirky and will hopefully appeal to new young craftspeople and sewers as well as long time quilters like me who love something different.
Consider too our heavier weight 7oz cotton, 54” wide Premier fabrics which will work perfectly with Moda’s new Barkcloth and their other towelling. Amazing for home furnishings and bags but also great for appliqué backgrounds. If you have seen my Gerard giraffe on our facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/TiffaniesFabrics you will have seen that he’s going to be stitched first onto wool and then onto a Premier fabric. I think he will look amazing.
